One of a series of paintings depicting the South Bank of the Thames between Putney Bridge and Barnes Bridge.

The bright colour flashes of the rowers’ uniforms really pinged against the blue, grey of the morning. The horizontal structures created by the oars and the strong lines of perspective shooting through the scene created an interesting dynamic. This and the square composition helped create the tension I was looking for, reflecting, perhaps, the mood of the rowers as they made ready for their time on the water.
